Sanchez or Geno?

The Quarterback battle continues as Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith fight for the
starting job. Sanchez and Geno have split first team reps so far as Rex and the staff
evaluate both of them in practice. So far it seems that Sanchez has the upper hand
as some have said that Geno hasn’t impressed many in practice. He can make any
throw but he is learning a new system and the Jets are without many starting wide
receivers in practice. Santonio Holmes still hasn’t practiced because he is still
rehabbing the foot injury from last season and has spent most of the time on the
stationary bike on the sideline. Stephen Hill has returned but drops are still plaguing
him.
“ You should be surprised if you ever drop the ball. Yesterday, I was surprised when
we caught it, Ryan said. You’re an NFL player, catch the football. You’re paid to catch
the football.”
Rex Ryan clearly not happy with the second group of Wide Receivers. Kerley and
Hill joined the injury plagued Receiving group and it didn’t help. Kerley has had his
worst day of practice dropping a touchdown and many passes in team drills. Rex
will pick a starter when the Wrs get healthy and both quarterbacks have a chance
to throw to them. Since the Jets are injured at the Wr position they should look into
bringing in Braylon Edwards who has always played great with them, and look into
bringing in Brandon Lloyd who is a great route runner and has excellent hands.
This battle will continue and a starter will most likely be announced before the
preseason unless Geno shines during preseason. Even if Sanchez is the starter
Rex said they would still use Geno in the read option and add that extra threat
that the defense has to prepare for. The option has worked wonders with mobile
quarterbacks as Russel Wilson, Caepernick, and RG3 have shown. The Jets would be
smart to use Geno Smith in that role.
However, for now Mark Sanchez has the upper hand and will most likely be the
starter come week 1. If Sanchez slips up Geno will be right there waiting for his
opportunity to get on the field.
